Power lines going underground
FPL’s Storm Secure Underground Program is moving neighborhood lines underground in phases chosen by FPL by feeder line, based on reliability. The city’s March 17, 2026, update gives the share of the city’s urban area served underground:
| Phase | Share of city | Cumulative |
|---|---|---|
| Underground before the program | 23.5% | 23.5% |
| Converted 2022 to 2024 | 2.4% | 25.9% |
| Under construction, 2024 to 2026 | 8.25% | 34.15% |
| In design, construction 2026 to 2027 | 4.1% | 38.25% |
| In public outreach, construction 2027 to 2028 | 2.25% | 40.5% |
| Future phases after 2028 | 59.5% |
FPL writes to owners in each area before design and construction, and each customer gets an FPL contact for the project. The city’s phase map (PDF) shows which neighborhoods are in which phase.
