Coral Gables picks up garbage twice a week and recycling once, both from the backyard, plus weekly curbside trash. Questions: 305-460-5000.

Last checked Oct. 8, 2026. Facts on this page come from the City of Coral Gables Public Works Solid Waste Division pages and the city’s Finance Department.

The City of Coral Gables runs its own trash service. Its Solid Waste Division collects garbage, recycling and yard waste for about 11,000 single-family homes. Garbage and recycling are picked up from the side or back of the house, not the curb. Trash, meaning yard debris and household items, is picked up from the swale or trash pit in front. Your days depend on your address: look them up on the city’s Find Your Collection Day map.

Garbage

Garbage is the household waste from the kitchen and bathroom: food scraps, food packaging, tissues and the like.

  • The city does not supply garbage cans. Buy your own; up to two 32-gallon cans are allowed per home.
  • Keep cans at the side of the house where they cannot be seen from the street. A can in the swale, the driveway or the front of the house is a code violation.
  • Bag all garbage securely. No bag may weigh more than 50 pounds; double-bag cat litter.
  • Secure glass so it cannot break the bag. No construction debris, paint or household chemicals.
  • On pickup days, leave gates and side doors unlocked so crews can reach the cans.

Food scraps can also go to the free community compost drop-off at the Coral Gables Library.

Recycling

The city does supply recycling bins. If your home has none, call 305-460-5000 or file a service request.

  • Do not put recycling outside until the night before pickup.
  • Keep items clean, dry and empty, and leave them loose. Do not bag recycling.
  • Flatten cardboard boxes and set them beside the bin. Call for a special pickup if you have a lot.
  • Never put lithium batteries in any bin.

Accepted: plastic bottles, tubs, cups and containers; paper, mail, magazines and paper cups; food and drink glass; cardboard, cereal boxes and lightly greasy pizza boxes; aluminum, steel and tin cans; and juice and milk cartons.

Not accepted: plastic bags, foil, food waste, foam, garden hoses, planter pots, clothing, holiday lights, pots and pans, extension cords, hangers, propane tanks, window or mirror glass, and pesticide or pool chemical containers.

Plastic bags and film go to the NexTrex bins at the Adult Activity Center, 2 Andalusia Ave.; the War Memorial Youth Center, 405 University Drive; and the Parking and Mobility Services office, 204 Minorca Ave.

Trash: yard debris and household items

Trash is picked up once a week from the swale or trash pit in front of the house.

  • Yard debris can go out before your collection day.
  • Household items, and bags holding organic matter, go out only after 6 p.m. the night before.
  • Each pickup takes up to 1 cubic yard, about the size of a washer or dryer. Extra is billed at $15 per cubic yard.
  • Furniture such as couches, mattresses and tables can go out after 6 p.m. the night before. Appliances, including grills with the propane tank removed, must be scheduled with the Solid Waste Division. The fee is $50 per furniture or appliance item.
  • Cardboard in a trash pit can bring a violation of up to $500.
  • The city does not take construction materials such as sand, concrete, soil, roofing or plywood. Use a licensed roll-off company.

Holidays

The Solid Waste pages do not publish a holiday pickup schedule. The city’s holiday calendar lists the days city offices close for the rest of 2026: Veterans Day, Nov. 11; Thanksgiving and the day after, Nov. 26-27; and Dec. 24-25. Call 305-460-5000 to confirm pickup around a holiday.

Hazardous waste, electronics and batteries

Keep Coral Gables Beautiful holds a Recycling Drive-Thru from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 14, in the parking lot behind City Hall, 405 Biltmore Way. Enter from Coral Way. Bring proof of Coral Gables residency. The event takes electronics, household hazardous waste, large cardboard, old 14-gallon recycling bins, clothing donations and paper for shredding (up to five office boxes or one 13-gallon bag per vehicle). It does not take medical waste, foam, ammunition or tires. Questions: 305-460-5008.

At other times, take paint, pesticides, pool chemicals, propane tanks and similar items to a Miami-Dade County Home Chemical Collection Center: 8801 NW 58th St., Doral, or 23707 SW 97th Ave., Homestead. Both are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday to Sunday. The city suggests calling the county Solid Waste Department first at 305-514-6666.

Household batteries can be dropped off at the Development Services Center, 427 Biltmore Way; Police and Fire Headquarters, 2151 Salzedo St.; Fire Station 4, 1345 Sunset Drive; the War Memorial Youth Center; Public Works, 2800 SW 72nd Ave.; and the Adult Activity Center. Used needles and sharps, sealed in a rigid container marked “DO NOT RECYCLE,” go to Police and Fire Headquarters from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday.

The annual waste fee

Single-family service is paid through an annual waste assessment. For Oct. 1, 2026, to Sept. 30, 2027, the Finance Department set it at $572 per living unit if paid by Aug. 15, 2026, or $601 per living unit billed on the November 2026 property tax bill. The county property appraiser decides how many living units a property has.
