Enrollment

The federal NCES directory counted 941 students in the 2024-25 school year, with 47 full-time-equivalent classroom teachers, a ratio of 20 students per teacher. The district’s online directory currently lists 912 students against a capacity of 880; it does not give a date for that count.

Programs and how to get in

From the school’s magnet programs page:

  • International Education (IE): an advanced and honors program with two language courses a year in French, Italian, German or Spanish. Students enter in sixth grade only.
  • International Studies (IS): language, humanities and, except in German and Italian, math taught in French, German, Italian or Spanish. The school says most students come from Sunset Elementary’s IS program, from George W. Carver Elementary’s Italian program, or as nationals of those countries, but any proficient student may apply. Students may enter in sixth, seventh or eighth grade after meeting the criteria and passing a language proficiency exam, if there is space.
  • Every course at Carver is at an advanced or honors level, the school says.

Apply through the district’s magnet application, open Oct. 1 to Jan. 15. The school’s history page traces Carver to a school for Black children in Coconut Grove founded in 1899, and says the school became an international education magnet after its enrollment fell in the mid-1980s.
